Guinea Pig Grumpies

Much to my dismay, Sammie has begged us and begged us for a pet the past few years. (The beta fish apparently isn't cuddly enough.) Tom and I love dogs, but he doesn't want to scoop the poop, and I don't want the hair in the house. Neither of us are cat lovers, so after some friends got their kids a hamster for Christmas, we finally broke down and let her get a guinea pig in January (not pictured above, mind you, this is number two!).

Taffy (the first guinea pig), was shy, but sweet, and Sam had fun with her. She had short hair (which stayed much cleaner, therefore not as smelly as Tilda, pictured above). However, one night after the kids were sleeping, I went to feed Taffy her lettuce, and to my horror, I found a rigid rodent (keep in mind Tom is always out of town when something like this happens!).

Sam was crushed for the first few days, but then was okay. Then her father, bless his little heart, told her she could get another one. This time she picked out a long haired guinea pig, which she happily named Tilda (family joke--growing up, Gary's guinea pig was named Hilda, but Tom thought it was Tilda). Not only do I clean the cage, change the bedding, give her food (pellets, hay, and lettuce) and water, but I also get to make arrangements for her care when we go out of town.

So here I am again. Shari, myself, our kids, and Jen are all heading to a resort in Tucson for some R & R for a few days this week (can it really be called R & R when we take along 5 kids?). So I get the fun task of loading up Tilda, the cage, and all her supplies, and hauling her to a friend's house (and paying their boys) to rodent-sit. Maybe they will love the dirty little furball so much they wont let her go!

Here's hoping . . .
