This past weekend, Grandma Jen was wonderful enough to come stay with the kids so I could take a trip to Cuba, oops, I mean Miami, and spend some time together with Tom (since I hadn't seen him in five weeks!). We considered it a celebration of our 10th Anniversary (one week late).
We spent a few days exploring areas near the Everglades, Miami Beach, the Port of Miami (where all the cruiseliners dock), and my favorite, the Florida Keys. Tom was based in Key West for a few months when Sammie was only two, and I was too busy shoveling six feet of snow in South Weber (and doing daycare) to be able to visit him. So he made up for it this time.
We took the three hour drive from Miami to Key West, seeing Key Largo, Marathon, etc., along the way. (If it hadn't been for the stifling humidity, it would have been near perfect! I'll take the Valley of the Sun any day over the Sunshine State--no humidity!) It was gorgeous to see nothing but turquoise ocean for miles and miles on both sides of the highway. We also managed to get stuck in a few Florida thunderstorms; they seemed much more violent than any I've experienced before.
Although a few things had changed in Key West, Tom was still able to give me a two-hour tour of Key West--the island in a nutshell. He showed me the Grand Key Resort where he stayed for three months, and of course, we couldn't miss a quick jaunt past the airport. He showed me the beach, and we were even able to see a wild sting ray. Tom took me past the only LDS Church (tiny, like something in Brazil). He showed me the landmark for the southernmost point in the U.S. (only 90 miles to Cuba!).
He also pointed out the spot of his infamous traffic stop--the one where the police officer pulled he and his buddy over and told them it was "completely unacceptable" for Tom (on his $10 bicycle from the Goodwill store) to be pulled down the street behind a motor scooter. He also showed me the spot on Duval street where he was hit in the head by a flying cell phone from an overhead balcony. (Maybe that's why he was smart enough to be pulled down the street by a motor scooter, eh?!) He showed me Ernest Hemingway's home, as well as Mallory Square, where the locals and tourists gather each night for a sunset celebration. Had I not been melting in the humidity, we probably would have spent more time perusing the stores and trinkets up and down Duval Street.
Although I was excited to see the kids again, it was so hard to get on the plane this morning and leave Tom! Oh well, at least I was able to escape reality for a little while!
P.S. I can't take credit for the above photo, as I am still waiting for Tom to email me the pictures we took ourselves.
